MISSING SPACES
Missing Spaces is a site-specific installation created for Eleusis 2023 European Capital of Culture and installed at the archaeological site of Ancient Eleusis.Comprising a map and a suspended ladder, the work highlights neglected parts of the archaeological landscape and modern city. Spaces that have been both emptied and exploited, metaphorically and literally, by industry and excavation, yet still present.
Installed in a hidden pit where a fig tree grows, it reflects on loss, secrecy, and the limits of knowledge, echoing the enigmatic nature of the Eleusinian Mysteries. The piece invites reflection on what lies beyond visibility, offering a symbolic gesture toward the unknown and the forgotten.
Spaces that are there but aren’t.
They are empty, but they are not voids.
They stand for non-material culture that is impossible to preserve.
They are occupied by different entities,
moving on different axes, where transmutation, regeneration and decay take place.
The project was realized during Mystery 19 Visual Arts Initiator III – But Don’t Tell Anyone Residency in Eleusis 2023 European Capital of Culture.
